Behind The Scenes with The Wizard

As you're reading this, there's a high chance you recently watched a video of another DJ doing a set on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok. If not, maybe you saw them perform at a wedding, a bar, or some private party. However, there's more to being a DJ than being able to scratch, cut, transition, and read the audience.

As fun as it is to perform the audience, you have the legal and business aspects to look after. That's right: PAPERWORK!!!

A professional reviews a large stack of documents, highlighting the demands of paperwork in an office environment.

That's right, just shaking hands and paying in cash won't do it. You have to think business wise:

  • Contracts: you need a signed agreement with clauses detailing your do's and don'ts. It's important to detail your services and duties to the client, and the responsibilities they must honour as part of that agreement.

  • Receipts/Invoices: You have both expenses and revenue as part of your business. Typical expenses include insurance, streaming services, Serato, etc. Your source of revenue include hourly wages, packages, etc.

Now, yes, playing the right songs for an event is important. However, you need to do some bookkeeping in order to keep track of how you spend your money. After all, you're investing into yourself.

With that in mind, just stay organized, and don't overthink it! From this DJ to all others, behold the magic of music!
